Let’s set the scene. It’s 6:15 in the morning. The birds are just starting to chirp, the sun’s only just remembered it has a job to do, and the average person is hitting snooze for the second time. But for us joiners? We’re already halfway through a bacon sarnie with one hand and loading the van with the other. Welcome to a day in the life of a BH Bespoak joiner — and trust us, it’s not all sawdust and swearing.
Based in the fine town of Kidderminster, our days are rarely spent in one spot. Our work sees us zipping across Worcestershire, dipping into Birmingham, the Black Country, and sometimes stretching as far as the Cotswolds — if the tea’s good and the client’s lovely.
So, if you’ve ever wondered what it really takes to craft kitchens, build bespoke cabinetry, and keep a joinery business ticking along like a well-oiled mitre saw — here’s the full (and sometimes splintery) picture.
The Early Start
It begins early. Not just “early” like school run early. We’re talking “where’s the sun?” early.
First job of the day: kettle on. Coffee, strong enough to wake the neighbours. Then it’s time to load the van. Depending on the job, we’re packing everything from Festools and Dewalts to timber, handles, hinges, worktops, scribes, and a breakfast bar that takes three of us to lift and doesn’t fit through the front door.
We triple-check we’ve got the right units (there’s always one you’re waiting on), make sure the cut list is spot-on, and head off to site. Most of our work is within an hour and a half of Kidderminster — perfect for a podcast or a bit of Planet Rock on the way.
Arriving at Site
There’s a familiar moment that happens on every job: you arrive, cup of tea in hand, and stare at the space like it’s a crime scene. Because in truth, before we work our magic, it usually looks like one.
Pipes sticking out the wall. Plug sockets where they shouldn’t be. The remnants of a 1980s kitchen, possibly fitted by a blindfolded chimp.
But this is where we shine. Before the tools even leave the van, we walk the space, mentally measure twice (because we’ve done it three times already on paper), and start planning our attack.
The Graft
Here’s the thing — joinery isn’t just cutting bits of wood and sticking them together. It’s art, science, problem-solving, and the occasional creative expletive.
A kitchen doesn’t just “go in.” It’s scribed to walls that look straight but aren’t. It’s adjusted for floors that slope, ceilings that bow, and pipework that no two plumbers in the world would ever agree on.
We spend a lot of time adjusting units so that everything lines up millimetre perfect. Even one wonky cabinet door can throw the whole look off. And trust us, if it’s not right, we’re not sleeping that night.
If it’s a bespoke job (which most are), there’s usually some custom bits to handle:
- A unit shaved down to fit a narrow alcove
- A corner cabinet built around a boiler that “wasn’t supposed to be there”
- A worktop mitred perfectly so it looks like it grew there
Some days you’re routing door edges and cutting cornice, other days you’re lying on your back trying to plumb in a sink while contemplating a career change. But that’s the trade — it’s never boring.
Site Banter & Bacon Butties
Let’s be honest — part of what makes the job so good is the people.
Whether we’re on a job with sparkies, plumbers, tilers, or just the client popping in to see how it’s going — there’s always a bit of banter flying around. Good-natured, of course. (Unless someone moves the spirit level again — then it’s war.)
Clients often say they love watching the space come together day by day. We’ll always stop for a chat, explain what we’re doing, and ask if they’re happy with progress. After all, it’s their home — and we want them to be proud of it.
Bonus points if they bring out biscuits. Even more if it’s Hobnobs.
The Unexpected Surprises
Now, no two days are ever the same — but one thing you can expect is the unexpected.
Sometimes it’s a missing part from the supplier. Other times, it’s discovering that the wall we were meant to fix to is basically plasterboard and hope.
We’ve lifted floors to find pipes laid by someone who must’ve been dizzy. We’ve opened boxes labelled “corner unit” only to find a sink base. And don’t even get us started on ceilings that aren’t level — nothing brings a grown joiner to their knees like a 15mm drop across a run of wall units.
But here’s the thing: we always find a way.
We improvise. We adapt. We make it work, and we do it well — because that’s the BH Bespoak standard.
A Quick Bite & Cracking On
Lunch, when it happens, is usually perched on a stack of cabinet boxes with a sandwich in one hand and a pencil behind your ear. If it’s a good day, someone remembers the flask. If it’s a really good day, there’s a chip shop nearby.
But there’s not much faffing — we like to graft and get it done right. We know clients are often juggling schedules, other trades, or just keen to get their home back. We respect that.
So we crack on. Worktops fitted, appliances slotted in, trim cut to perfection, all the edges siliconed neat.
By late afternoon, the space looks miles better than it did at 8am. The client’s already smiling, and we’re only halfway through.
Pack Down, Clean Up
This is the bit people often overlook.
Once the last screw is in and the laser level’s been switched off, we don’t just down tools and leg it. We vacuum. We wipe. We tidy. We leave the space as clean as we found it — or cleaner.
Nothing winds us up more than seeing a job ruined by a messy finish. It doesn’t matter how nice the cupboards are — if there’s dust everywhere and offcuts on the floor, it’s not a job we’d be proud of.
Heading Back
Once the van’s loaded, it’s back to base or back home, depending on the job. Sometimes we stop in at the workshop to cut parts for tomorrow, or to prep something bespoke — a made-to-measure shelf, a new set of doors for a pantry unit, or a full shaker wardrobe for a job next week.
Then it’s notes in the diary, tools put back in their proper place (mostly), and maybe a quick update on Instagram to show off the day’s progress.
Why We Love It
It’s not glamorous. It’s not always easy. And it’s definitely not clean.
But it is rewarding.
There’s nothing quite like walking into a bare, battered space and leaving it beautiful. Seeing someone’s face light up when their dream kitchen comes together — that’s why we do it.
And the pride that comes from knowing every hinge, screw, and mitre is spot-on? You can’t beat that.
We love what we do because it matters. We’re not just chucking in cabinets — we’re building spaces where people cook Christmas dinner, help kids with homework, have late-night cuppas and early morning cereal chats.
That’s the real joy in joinery. It’s more than just fitting. It’s crafting homes.
